How to Monitor Your Brand’s Presence on ChatGPT: A Routine, Not a Screenshot
By Pedro Sonda, dooop
Monitoring a brand’s presence on ChatGPT means repeating, in regular cycles, the same set of important business questions in a controlled environment and comparing the results with a baseline: how often the brand appears, how it is described, who appears alongside it, which sources are cited, and how much traffic comes from ChatGPT. Proper interpretation compares cycles, considers the margin of error, and records what has changed during the period.
ChatGPT had 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, according to OpenAI (TechCrunch). For many brands, what it says about them is already part of their reputation, and reputation requires continuous monitoring.
Updated in October 2026.
What to Monitor
| Dimension | Question | Example Alert |
|---|---|---|
| Presence | How often does the brand appear, by intention family? | Drop in hiring-related queries |
| Description | Does ChatGPT correctly describe services, audience, and location? | Discontinued service still mentioned |
| Competition | Who appears alongside or instead of the brand? | New competitor entering recommendations |
| Sources | Which pages and domains support the answers? | Brand’s page no longer cited |
| Traffic | How many visits come from ChatGPT, and to which pages? | Drop in sessions with utm_source=chatgpt.com |
OpenAI states that ChatGPT includes utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral links, allowing this traffic to be isolated in analytics (OpenAI — FAQ for publishers).
Interpretation: Monitoring presence alone hides part of the problem: a brand may continue to appear but be described incorrectly, or lose ground to a competitor without an immediate traffic drop.
dooop Framework: The Monthly Monitoring Cycle
| Step | What to Do | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Execute | Run the fixed set of questions, with variations and repetitions, with and without search | Cycle observations |
| 2. Compare | Calculate metrics and compare with baseline and previous cycle | Variations by dimension |
| 3. Explain | Separate real variations from noise and cross-reference with event records | Hypotheses of cause |
| 4. Act | Define interventions for declines and reinforcements for gains | Plan for next cycle |
| 5. Record | Note actions, website changes, campaigns, and platform updates | History to explain future cycles |
Step 3 is where most monitoring efforts fail: every variation is treated as a trend.
How to Separate Signal from Noise
ChatGPT’s answers vary greatly between runs. SparkToro found less than a 1 in 100 chance that two responses would produce the same brand list and recommends running each prompt 60 to 100 times for reliable measurement (SparkToro, 2026).
Practical rules for interpretation:
- Compare by intention family, not by isolated question. Families have more observations and lower margin of error.
- Only treat as real change what exceeds the margin of error. A 30% rate measured in 100 responses has a margin of about 9 percentage points up or down (95% confidence).
- Confirm over two cycles. A drop appearing in one cycle but disappearing in the next is probably noise.
Control the Execution Environment
Monitoring is only comparable if conditions are the same each cycle.
- No personalization. With memory enabled, ChatGPT can rewrite searches using user information (TechCrunch, 2025). Use accounts without history or disable memory and history referencing in settings (OpenAI — Memory).
- Record search mode. ChatGPT decides to search the web based on the question or when the user activates search (OpenAI). Record which mode each answer was obtained in.
- Be cautious with automated executions. Tools and scripts querying models through other means may use different settings than the ChatGPT product (model, search, personalization). Check with the provider how executions are done and if they represent the user experience.
Triggers for an Extra Round
In addition to the monthly cycle, perform an extra measurement when:
- The brand’s website changes structure, domain, or
robots.txt; OpenAI states that blocking the OAI-SearchBot prevents the site from appearing in ChatGPT search responses (OpenAI — crawlers); - The brand launches a service, changes positioning, or has significant press coverage;
- The platform announces important product or model changes;
- Traffic with
utm_source=chatgpt.comchanges abruptly.
Who Should Be Responsible
Monitoring often lacks ownership because it crosses areas: marketing, SEO, communications, and product. Assign a responsible party for the cycle and a forum for decisions in step 4. Changes in brand description, for example, require joint action from communications (external sources) and website teams (own sources).
What to Do Now
- If you don’t have a baseline: create one before any monitoring; without it, there is no comparison. See How to Measure a Company’s Presence in AI Responses.
- If you already measure but without event records: start recording today; it explains future cycles.
- If ChatGPT describes the brand incorrectly: treat it as a communications priority, not just marketing.
- If presence has dropped: follow the cause order in How to Discover Why a Company Does Not Appear in AI Responses.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is monthly the ideal frequency? For most brands, yes, as a regular cycle. Markets with high activity or brands exposed in the press may need biweekly cycles for main intention families.
Can I monitor only by ChatGPT traffic? No. Traffic shows the effect, but many responses do not generate clicks. Presence in responses must be measured directly.
What to do when ChatGPT describes the brand incorrectly? Identify the sources cited in the incorrect answers and correct the information at the origin: website, profiles, directories, and when possible, third-party content.
