From SEO to GEO: How Business Discovery Has Changed and What Each Era Taught Us

By Pedro Sonda, dooop

Business discovery has gone through four eras: the era of referrals and directories, where the competition was for a spot on lists; the era of link-based search, where the competition was for position on a results page (SEO); the era of platforms and reviews, where reputation was contested on marketplaces, networks, and review sites; and the era of AI-generated answers, where the competition is to be included and justified within a response (GEO). In each era, the unit of competition, who makes the selection, and the way of measurement changed. GEO does not replace what came before; it builds on those lessons and adds a new challenge.

Updated October 2026.

dooop Framework: The 4 Eras and 3 Variables

EraUnit of CompetitionWho SelectsTypical MetricWhat the Company Did
1. Referrals and DirectoriesA name on a listTrusted people, guide editorsVolume of referralsRelationship building, advertising in guides and lists
2. Link-Based Search (SEO)A position on the results pageRanking algorithmPosition, traffic, clicksKeywords, links, technical optimization
3. Platforms and ReviewsRating, reviews, and prominence on platformsPlatform algorithms and other customersAverage rating, number of reviewsReputation management, presence on marketplaces and networks
4. AI-Generated Answers (GEO)Inclusion and justification within an answerAI system, drawing from multiple sourcesFrequency of presence by intent, citations, description fidelityEntity clarity, citable content, third-party confirmation, measurement

Interpretation: With each era, selection became more mediated and based on aggregated signals. In era 4, the system summarizes and compares before the buyer sees any options.

What Each Era Taught and Still Applies

Era 1: Reputation Comes From Others

A recommendation from someone trustworthy has always carried more weight than self-promotion. This lesson returns strongly in era 4: Ahrefs found, across 75,000 brands, a correlation of 0.664 between brand mentions on the web and presence in AI Overviews, compared to 0.218 for backlinks (Ahrefs, 2025).

Era 2: Being Findable Is a Condition

Without technical access and relevance, nothing happens. This remains true: OpenAI reports that sites blocking the OAI-SearchBot do not appear in ChatGPT search responses (OpenAI). SEO continues to be the eligibility condition; see Is GEO the New SEO?.

Era 3: Customer Experience Becomes Content

Customer reviews and reports began influencing other buyers’ decisions. In era 4, this content is one of the sources AI uses, especially for recommendation queries (Peec AI via Search Engine Land, 2026).

What Is New in Era 4

  1. Selection Happens Before the Click. Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared to 15% for those who did not see one (Pew Research Center, 2025).
  2. Ranking Explains Less. On average, only 12% of URLs cited by AI assistants were in Google’s top 10 for the same query (Ahrefs, 2025).
  3. The Answer Varies. The same query can generate different lists each time, requiring measurement by sampling; see How to Measure AI Visibility.
  4. The Discipline Has a Name. The term GEO was formalized in an academic paper by researchers from Princeton University and IIT Delhi, among others, presented at the KDD 2024 conference (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).

A Forecast and What It Indicates

In February 2024, Gartner predicted that by 2026, traditional search volume would drop 25%, with search marketing losing ground to AI chatbots and other virtual agents (Gartner, 2024). Regardless of whether the number is confirmed, the direction is clear: part of discovery now happens within generated answers, and Google itself has incorporated AI answers into regular search.

Has Era 5 Already Begun?

With agents that research, compare, and purchase on behalf of people, discovery may shift to system-to-system interactions. The signals and implications are discussed in The Next Battle for Attention: When AI Decides What to Recommend.

What to Do Now

  • Do not abandon what works: technical access, reputation, and reviews remain foundational.
  • Add what is new: entity clarity, citable content, and measurement of presence by intent.
  • Change the metric: beyond position and traffic, track whether the company is included and well described in answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SEO dead? No. SEO remains the condition to be found by search systems, including those used by AIs. What changed is that it is no longer sufficient to be chosen within an answer.

Is GEO just a new word for SEO? No. GEO deals with a different unit of competition (inclusion in an answer), sources beyond the company’s own site, and its own metrics, such as frequency of presence and description fidelity.
